EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
