Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
