The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
