The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
